Effect of Dietary Supplementation of Probiotics(Economix(R)) on the Performance of Broiler Chicks and Noxious Gas Reduction in a Broiler House

Abstract
A study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of probiotics (Economix^R) on the performance of broiler chicks and noxious gas reduction in a broiler house. A total of 120 broiler chicks at 2 days of age were fed the experimental diets containing 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.5% Economix^R for 5 weeks. The chicks fed 0.2% Economix^R consumed more (p$lt;0.05) feed than those fed 0.5 and 1% Economix^R and the average body weight gains were higher (p$lt;0.05) in the chicks fed 0.1 and 0.2% Economix^R than those in the birds fed 0 and 0.5% Economix^R. The dietary supplementation of Economix^R at all the levels resulted in improved feed conversion rates (p$lt;0.05) compared with the control group. The birds fed diets containing Economix^R showed better digestibilities of dry matter and crude protein than those fed the control diet (p$lt;0.05). Besides, the digestibility of crude fiber of 0.1% Economix^R group was significantly improved (p$lt;0.05) compared with that of other groups. The birds fed diets containing Economix^R at all the levels showed the tendencies of the decreased population of fecal Escherichia coli and increased Lactobacillus colonies compared with those fed the control diet. NH©ý gas emission in the broiler house was significantly decreased (p$lt;0.05) by all dietary supplementations of Economix^R. These results indicated that the dietary supplementations of 0.1 and 0.2% Economix^R were effective in improving broiler performance and reducing noxious gas production in broiler houses.
